We’ve been busy since our blockbuster Meguiar’s MotorEx event in July exhibiting at AUTO SALON Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney shows with record-breaking crowds. We were also heavily involved with the WA STREET MACHINE & HOT ROD SPECTACULAR in Perth with the second round of the Meguiar’s Superstars series for 2004/05. and whistles over the action-packed three days of 7, 8 and 9th January.
The number of serious crashes involving young drivers is truly frightening. Statistics show that P-plate drivers are two to three times more likely to be involved in a casualty crash or fatality compared to experienced drivers.
We expect young drivers to have practiced for 50 hours or so and demonstrate skills such as reverse-parking, hill starts and three point turns as part of earning their provisional licences. Strangely however, our regulators never test the important skills that will potentially save lives – such as being able to stop in a critical situation, cope with a wet weather skid, or take evasive action to avoid a collision.

The enemy of the wheel is brake dust – and modern day, non-asbestos pads can deposit more brake dust than ever. This is especially the case with European cars.
It’s important to realise that if not cleaned regularly, brake dust will attack your wheels and deposits will continue to build up. Then, in addition to being unsightly, the brake dust will be very stubborn to clean off and permanent damage can be caused to the wheel surface/coating.
Remember that most factory and many aftermarket wheels are coated with the same clear two pack paint as the car’s bodywork, so they need to be treated with respect. And some highly specialised/ultra performance wheels can be made from very sophisticated materials that may not be clear coated. These wheels are usually even more sensitive to damage from brake dust and/or incorrect cleaning procedures.
The greatest challenge for a wheel cleaner is to be aggressive enough to dissolve and remove brake dust and road grime, yet be safe for use on the many and various wheel and brake caliper composites. The simple rule of thumb is that the more aggressive and instantaneous the wheel cleaner is, the more caution required. So always follow the product instructions of use and if in doubt check with the wheel manufacturers care guidelines. Tips worth remembering:
- Ensure wheels and brakes are cool before you start
- If it’s the first time you’ve used a particular wheel cleaner on your wheels, test on half of one wheel and dry. If there are any problems, this will help you show the wheels original condition
- Clean your wheels after you’ve washed the rest of your car as you may want to use the remaining car wash solution and a sponge to finish off
- Chamois wheels dry after rinsing to prevent water spotting
When it comes to caring for tyres, it’s a much simpler proposition. Whilst there are various grades and compounds, tyre care is relatively straight forward. Tyres will loose their blackness or turn a dirty brown colour because of a build up of grime and/or UV degradation, so using a protectant is very important. And remember, tyre black and shoe polish/nugget are NOT protectants!
It’s also important to regularly clean your tyres with a brush or sponge rather than continually apply a protectant over a dirty surface.
